New Year's Eve in Venice

Venice has a lot to offer on New Year's Eve! Here's what you will find in town, if you wish to visit the city during this period

Italian style New Year's Eve: it all starts with a huge dinner

The Italian ‘Capodanno’ is a traditional secular celebration which finds its roots the history of the past centuries and mainly involves food rituals. On 31 December 2018, the San Silvestro dinner (cenone di San Silvestro, in Italian) is a must for everyone as well as some of the delicacies on the menu such as lentils, commonly considered propitious and cotechino, a typical cold cut with a buttery texture which is said to bring wealth for the future. Both the best hotels in the city as well as local restaurants and bistros offer a mouth-watering selection of traditional dishes well worth a try. A tip for those who experience New Year’s Eve in Italy for the first time: remember that, as celebrations go on until midnight, dinner usually starts around 8pm and 9pm, so be ready for a late-night dinner.

After dinner: party time!

After a typical dinner, the perfect ending for the longest night of the year is waiting for you in Sestiere San Marco. Here, a beautiful firework performance will brighten the night and the lagoon alike with its multi-faceted colours.
