The Cini Foundation has recently launched the Squero, a charming auditorium on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore and a new, must-visit destination for music in Venice
A violin on the sea: surprisingly this is not the title of a film but a must-visit destination for music lovers in Venice. Its name ‘Lo Squero’ (the Venetian word for a boatyard) harks back to its origins.
The Auditorium and Its History
Formerly, the headquarters of a 19th-century workshop where boats were manufactured and repaired, the space, boasting a spectacular view of the lagoon, was recently converted into a modern, 200-seat auditorium thanks to the intervention of architectural firm Cattaruzza e Millosevich.
Despite in-depth renovation work, Lo Squero has not lost any of its former appeal. Accented by references to the Arsenale and inspired by typical Venetian architecture, in addition to its original oak-beamed ceiling, its décor is enhanced by cream-coloured walls and glass partitions. A setting designed to please the eyes and the ears.
The Music Concerts
The program dedicated to classical music is the result of a collaborative agreement with the local nonprofit Asolo Musica, Associazione Amici della Musica, whose aim is the promotion of the music culture through concerts, lessons, workshops and festivals (since 1976).
The famous quartet Quartetto di Venezia, in residence at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, also features performances of chamber music, e.g. by Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms with guest artists.
